Regarding bourbon, which was never well stocked in my province in the first place, I really don’t know what to tell you. It’s almost disappeared, but for an interesting recent addition: Corner Creek Reserve Bourbon ($46.95) from Bardstown, Kentucky. At 88 proof, it’s incredibly smooth and refined; gets the job done without being harsh. It’s a totally different style than most bourbons (indicated, in part, by it’s straw colour and odd burgundy bottle vessel) and, honestly, wouldn’t get a Pappy Van Winkle drinker to switch teams, but if mom likes a light colour, light body with a spicy, yet smooth flavour, this could be an interesting new treat

Recognize any of these grapes—Aragonês, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, and cabernet sauvignon? The Cab, surely, and if you like port, probably the Touriga too. They’re all in the mix for a newly arrived three-litre bag-in-the-box Portuguese table wine. Full name Pensador Vinho Regional Alentejano, it’s priced in the $30 range and is just coming onto shelves now. I think we’ll be sipping a lot of this light, fresh, agreeably floral table red in the spring. Might not be too easy to spot in stores, as Portuguese sections aren’t extensive, except for the prized ports. I first served it with Savoy potatoes—you know: spuds, beef stock, and grated Swiss cheese baked for an hour—and turkey thighs marinated in lemon and olive oil and rosemary on the grill, with Portuguese marmelada (quince paste) and Saint André cheese after. If the importer can find a matching white—same size, package, price for the warm weather—we’ll be all set for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Pensador is the one and only Portuguese bag-in-the-box wine hereabouts.

Drink Recipes    

Cuca Fresca Caipirinha (served in a 10 oz. rocks glass) 2.5 oz. Cuca Fresca Premium Cachaça 1 lime, cut into 8 pieces 2 Tbsp. superfine sugar   Place the quartered lime in a small shaker and add sugar. Muddle lime and sugar together in the bottom of the shaker. Fill the shaker to the top with ice. Fill with cachaça and shake. Garnish with a lime slice and piece of fresh sugarcane.

   

Miami Iced Tea (served in a highball glass) 3 oz. Cuca Fresca Premium Cachaça 2 oz. sour mix 2 oz. Coca-cola 1 oz. orange juice   Pour all of the ingredients into a tall, ice-filled mixing glass. Gold Medal. Clear with a platinum cast. Vibrant aromas of fresh herbs and spices, piney juniper, and twisted lemon peels jump from the glass. A silky entry leads to a fruity-yet-dry medium-full body of bold cracked juniper berry, pink peppercorns, lemon curd, clove, and pastry frosting flavors.
